Boost Immunity Naturally: 7 Ayurvedic Herbs for Cold, Cough and Seasonal Illness

If every change of season brings a cold, your Ojas — the Ayurvedic essence of immunity — needs attention. These seven herbs and a few daily habits build lasting resilience.

Immunity in Ayurveda is called Ojas — the refined essence produced when food is digested completely and the body's tissues are well nourished. Strong Ojas means you recover quickly, sleep well and rarely fall ill. Weak Ojas shows up as recurring colds, slow healing, low energy and poor stress tolerance. Building it is less about a miracle pill and more about a few good herbs used consistently, plus habits that protect digestion and sleep.

1. Giloy (Guduchi)

Known as Amrita — the nectar — Giloy is the premier Rasayana for immunity. It helps the body respond to infections, supports recovery from fever and balances all three doshas. Take it as a decoction of the fresh stem, as juice, or as powder or tablet.

2. Tulsi (Holy Basil)

Tulsi clears the respiratory tract, eases cough and congestion and helps the body cope with stress. Five to seven fresh leaves chewed in the morning, or Tulsi tea twice a day, is a simple habit with outsized benefits.

3. Ashwagandha

Chronic stress quietly suppresses immunity. Ashwagandha is an adaptogen that lowers the stress response, improves sleep and restores stamina after illness. Half a teaspoon of powder in warm milk at night is the traditional dose.

4. Amla (Indian Gooseberry)

One of the richest sources of vitamin C and a powerful antioxidant, Amla strengthens immunity, supports the liver and improves digestion. Fresh fruit, juice, powder or as the base of Chyawanprash.

5. Turmeric (Haldi)

Antimicrobial, antioxidant and supportive of a healthy inflammatory response. Best taken with black pepper and fat — golden milk is the classic form. Our Panchmesh Haldi Powder pairs turmeric with supporting herbs for seasonal protection.

6. Mulethi (Licorice)

Soothing for the throat and lungs, Mulethi is the herb for dry cough, hoarseness and irritated airways. Use as tea or a small pinch of powder with honey. Avoid in high blood pressure without advice.

7. Chyawanprash

Not a single herb but a jam of around forty, built on Amla. One teaspoon daily in winter is among the oldest preventive routines in India, especially for children and older adults.

A simple immunity kadha

Boil two cups of water with five Tulsi leaves, a half-inch piece of crushed ginger, four black peppercorns, a small cinnamon stick and a pinch of turmeric. Simmer until one cup remains, strain, and add honey once it is warm, not hot. Drink once a day during seasonal change.

Habits that matter more than herbs

  • Sleep seven to eight hours; Ojas is rebuilt at night.
  • Eat warm, freshly cooked food and avoid over-eating; undigested food creates Ama, the enemy of Ojas.
  • Exercise moderately every day — sweat, but do not exhaust yourself.
  • Get morning sunlight for vitamin D.
  • Manage stress: ten minutes of slow breathing daily is enough to shift the nervous system.

When to see a doctor

A cold that lasts more than ten days, fever above 102°F, breathing difficulty, or infections that keep returning every few weeks deserve a proper assessment. At Dr Dilraj Healthcare in Jalalabad, Dr. Jagdeep Singh can identify why immunity is low and build a personalised Rasayana plan — including supplements like Nutrizen Gold where general weakness is the issue.

Herbal remedies can interact with medicines and are not suitable for everyone — please consult Dr. Jagdeep Singh or your physician before starting any new supplement, especially if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or managing a chronic condition.
