Ayurvedic Skin Care: Natural Remedies for Acne, Pigmentation and Glowing Skin
Share this article
Healthy skin is made from the inside. Ayurveda treats acne, dark spots and dullness by cooling the blood, clearing the gut and using a handful of time-tested herbs.
Creams and face washes act on the surface, but most skin problems start deeper — in digestion, in the blood and in the balance of the doshas. Ayurveda describes the skin as a mirror of Rakta Dhatu (blood tissue) and of Pitta. Acne, redness and pigmentation usually mean excess heat; dryness and premature wrinkles point to Vata; oiliness and blackheads suggest Kapha. Treating the pattern rather than the pimple is what gives lasting results.
Common root causes of skin trouble
- Constipation and poor digestion, which push toxins out through the skin.
- Too much spicy, fried, sour and fermented food, which heats the blood.
- Hormonal fluctuations, particularly around periods or with PCOS.
- Stress and late nights.
- Harsh soaps and frequent scrubbing that strip the skin's barrier.
- Dehydration and low intake of fresh vegetables and fruit.
Herbs that purify from within
- Neem: bitter, cooling and antimicrobial — the first herb for acne and boils.
- Manjistha: the classic blood purifier for pigmentation, uneven tone and dark spots.
- Turmeric: reduces inflammation and supports healing, inside and out.
- Sariva (Anantmool): cools Pitta and soothes itchy, red skin.
- Giloy and Amla: antioxidant support and immunity for recurring infections.
- Triphala: keeps the bowel clear, which alone improves many skin conditions.
Our Purify Herbal Purifier Syrup brings several of these blood-purifying herbs together for acne, boils and dull skin, and is best used for at least six to eight weeks alongside diet changes.
Simple external care
- Ubtan: a paste of besan (gram flour), a pinch of turmeric, a little milk or rose water, used two or three times a week instead of soap.
- Neem and tulsi paste applied to active pimples for fifteen minutes.
- Aloe vera gel as a light moisturiser for oily or acne-prone skin.
- Sandalwood and rose water pack to cool redness.
- Sesame or almond oil massage for dry, ageing skin.
- Always rinse with cool or lukewarm water, never hot.
Diet for clear, glowing skin
Favour bitter and astringent tastes: karela, methi, leafy greens, bottle gourd, pomegranate and amla. Drink plenty of water, and add coriander, fennel or cumin water. Cut down on sugar, dairy if you notice it triggers acne, packaged snacks and very spicy food. Include good fats — ghee, soaked almonds and walnuts — for a natural glow.
Lifestyle essentials
Sleep before 11 pm; the skin repairs itself at night. Manage stress with breathing or a short walk. Change pillow covers regularly, keep hair oils off the face and never squeeze pimples — it spreads infection and leaves marks.
