Natural Remedies for Acidity and Gas: An Ayurvedic Guide to Better Digestion
Share this article
Burning after meals, bloating, belching and gas are among the most common complaints we see. Ayurveda treats the cause — weak digestive fire — not just the symptom.
Antacids are among the most sold medicines in India, and yet acidity keeps coming back. That is because most antacids switch off the symptom without addressing why the stomach is producing too much acid, or why food is sitting and fermenting instead of being digested. Ayurveda starts from a different question: how strong is your Agni?
Understanding Agni
Agni is the digestive fire. When it is balanced, food is digested completely, nutrients are absorbed and waste is eliminated on time. When Agni is too low (Manda Agni), food ferments, producing gas, heaviness and Ama — sticky metabolic waste. When it is too sharp (Tikshna Agni), acid burns and you feel hungry but uncomfortable. Most acidity is a mix of both: irregular meals, stress and the wrong foods disturb the fire.
Common triggers of acidity and gas
- Eating late at night or lying down soon after meals.
- Skipping breakfast and then overeating at lunch.
- Too much tea, coffee, fried food, pickles and very spicy dishes.
- Eating while stressed, rushed or distracted by a screen.
- Cold drinks with meals, which dampen Agni.
- Incompatible combinations — milk with salty or sour food, fruit immediately after a meal.
Kitchen remedies that work
- Jeera (cumin) water: boil one teaspoon of cumin in two cups of water, reduce to half, sip warm after meals to relieve gas and bloating.
- Fennel (saunf): chew half a teaspoon after meals, or drink fennel tea for a burning stomach.
- Ajwain with a pinch of black salt: excellent for gas and heaviness, taken with warm water.
- Ginger: a thin slice with rock salt before meals kindles Agni. Avoid if you have active burning.
- Amla: cooling and acid-balancing; fresh, as juice or powder.
- Coriander and mint: soothe heat in the stomach.
- Cold milk without sugar: quick relief for burning, used occasionally.
- Triphala at night: keeps the bowel moving so gas and acid do not build up.
Daily habits that fix the root cause
Eat at regular times, with lunch as the biggest meal. Sit down, chew well and finish three hours before bed. Walk a hundred steps after eating — the traditional Shatapavali. Keep water warm or room temperature and drink most of it between meals rather than with them. Manage stress with a few minutes of slow breathing before food; the gut and the nervous system are tightly linked.
Ayurvedic formulations
For stubborn cases, classical preparations such as Avipattikar Churna, Hingvastak Churna, Shankha Bhasma and Sutshekhar Ras are used — always in the right dose for the right person. Our Digestive Care range is built on these principles. Because acidity with weak Agni needs different herbs from acidity with sharp Agni, it is worth a consultation rather than guessing.
When to see a doctor
Severe or persistent pain, difficulty swallowing, vomiting, black stools, unintentional weight loss, or symptoms that wake you at night need proper evaluation. Dr. Jagdeep Singh sees patients with chronic acidity and IBS-type symptoms at Dr Dilraj Healthcare in Jalalabad; book an appointment online or on WhatsApp.
